Teaching Hospitals and Community Practice Areas

The clinical training programme of the faculty is primarily carried out in Teaching Hospital Anuradhapura (THA), the third-largest hospital in the country, as the affiliated teaching hospital. THA is equipped with modern diagnostic and management facilities. The academic staff of all clinical departments provides services as honorary specialists at THA. Moreover, nearly a hundred specialists in different specialities who are attached to the Ministry of Health – Sri Lanka serves as the extended faculty in THA. THA has a capacity of 2,200 beds. In 2021, it served 110,871 and 135,072 individuals on an out-patient and in-patient basis respectively. In addition to THA, clinical training conducts at Teaching Hospital Polonnaruwa as the second affiliated teaching hospital. Both the teaching hospitals affiliated with the faculty are very rich in a wide variety of clinical materials for training.

The extensive community practice area of the faculty including Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas of Nuwaragampalatha Central (NPC), Nuwaragampalatha East (NPE), Thalawa, and Mihinthale consists of a socio-economically diverse population that enables comprehensive primary and preventive care training for the undergraduates. The above training is linked with extensive community services to ensure that students get hands-on experience in public health.

The programme includes field visits to,

  • meet and discuss with different public health professionals in the public health system at grass-root, divisional and regional levels,
  • observe public health service provisions via a diverse set of clinics targeted at different population groups, and
  • observe institutes providing services of public health significance (e.g. water treatment plant, care for children with special needs, elderly care, etc.).
